The 10th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week, held from 9-13 September 2024 in Luanda, Angola, aimed to underscore the significance of engineering in Africa’s sustainable development. The event sought to enhance the visibility of engineering achievements, foster collaboration among African countries to address shared infrastructure challenges, and inspire youth and the public about the role of engineers in tackling critical societal issues. The theme, “Engineering the Future: Innovative Infrastructure Solutions for a Sustainable Africa and Swift AfCFTA Implementation,” highlighted the focus on developing sustainable infrastructure and accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
About UNESCO Africa Engineering Week
In 2014, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) together with the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO) partnered with UNESCO to launch Africa Engineering Week, a platform for the African continent to inspire young people to pursue engineering careers and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to communicate the importance of engineering to policymakers, society and the engineering profession. Since its inception in 2014, UNESCO Africa Engineering Week has been hosted in various African countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Through a range of outreach programs, workshops, and public engagements, the event emphasized the importance of engineering education, technological innovation, and inclusivity. It aimed to encourage the next generation to pursue careers in STEM fields and contribute to Africa’s growth. The event also provided a platform for discussing innovative solutions and strategies that align with both sustainable development goals and the broader objectives of the AfCFTA.
